i'm a survivorof 2 civilwars, Ghana, Lebanon, all before the age of 11. The result was immigration to 3 continents as a teen, which leaves an influence upon the soul that cries out for justice. My poetry and writing reflect that and more.
Faith!
Tick tock, tick tick, Zeus and Hera were gods of old,
Whose siblings and children ruled Olympus to forward
Their traits into humanity, but if they didn’t subjugate
Themselves to the will of the gods, they impose their revenge.
Tick tock, tick tock, polytheism gods’ names change
With time, civilizations, to represent the needs of the
People, from Thor to Anu, to Anubis, and Dragon
Or Shangti who require sacrifice and receded into anon.
Tick tock, tick tock, monotheism starts with Moses,
Jesus, and Mohammad whose miracles and messages
Are similar in that they ALL believe in One God that reigns
Supreme in the heavens.
Today, we regress into polytheism of the church
Of the broken god, that believes in evil within flesh,
While aspiring to mechanization of self, logic, and intellect.
Again the female god is animalistic and impulsive.
Yet, so many others continue to revere the monotheistic
Religions, knowing that faith is an antidepressant,
A builder of confidence, a strength stronger than mountains.
It elevates you and steers you away from obduracy.
Reflection
Chaos is all around us. We woke up on a winter morn last February to the knowledge the the virus has spread. Today, almost a year later, we are under yet another lockdown that has even harsher penalties.
What’s the world coming to? A vitus, I can understand, a volcano, flood, earthquake, fire even, all can be analyzed and man’s ingenuity comes into play, and saves the day.
However, when a political figure insites violence, and approves of bigotry/ racism, in this day and age is unacceptable. Why do we, as people, feel the need to follow where we lead? Shouldn’t we have achieved enough awareness of the world around us to notice that races exist, but they have a common denominator: humanity, red blood, and emotions.
Don’t let yourself be swept away by what the speeches that demean anyone, and promote violence against them. Rather highlight the importance of inclusion, acceptance, and friendship. In so doing, you are providing others with a role model that is human, perhaps fallible, but at least, a person you can speak to, listen to, argue with …. in a civilized manner.
Buried in Ice
Drowning under a sheet of ice,
Flaying, swimming endlessly trying, vainly
To raise your head above the rise of the watery
Sepulcher that’s more somber than any bleak cave.
The sinuous water caresses and spontaneously
Freezes as it embraces our slumberous weight into its
Stygian obscurity, driving fear into our heavy hearts.
Propelling our entrenched sense of ‘fight or flight’ not to be flighty!
Our terror of being buried alive on land or sea
Is an apologue for the actions we take to embed
Our confusion in unraveling the social behaviored sea
Corresponding to a multicultural divide that’s likened
To attempting to surmount Everest’s easiest route
To a summit that is the ‘ideal’ we have of success.
We worry so about success and measure it with the ‘norms’
And forget our actual achievements that we need to celebrate.
Brake the ice, punch through the barrier, surge above
The mud and disgust of a world buried in icy artifice,
That needs to compete and surpass one another, and be
Who you need to be so your uniqueness can shine.
The Reel
One, one, twenty one, a new day starting a new
Chapter in your life.
There is a need at times to wish for a new
Beginning, erasing all that came before.
While your mind slips from one memory to another,
Like a movie reel replaying moments of laughter,
Difficulty, obstacles, challenges, even despair.
Are you watching a comedy, drama, suspense, or horror?
Interestingly, they all coexist in the life that we live.
Life is more dramatic, comedic, intriguing, and satisfying
Than any movie or book you’ve watched or were reading.
It raises so many questions of existence, faith,
Identity, even belief in God, whose reasons for our trials
Are His alone. We, as people, turn those obstacles
Into evil and something to be feared.
While the reality is that those challenges are our ‘tests’
On earth, where we are judged by how we react to all our problems,
And not for the existence of the complication itself.
Live in Love
Red roses for love and passion
Candles for creating an ambiance for love
Chocolate and candy to show its sweetness
Swans’ necks form a heart of love
Pigeons are for fidelity, longevity, peace
What other symbols do you need for objects of fondness.
What are mine, yours? Are they the same?
I believe each of us has one or more that are uniquely
Ours. We cherish them as though, thoroughly
Loved, like a person or pet, we pamper them,
Talk, complain, vent, and play with them,
As though animate, alive, aware, awesome,
And astonish in its silence and peace.
Those objects of love become our lifeline
To better, younger, simpler days where time,
And responsibilities were minimal, a line
To laughter, languishing, loving, incorporating
All we love into simplicity and caring!!!!
Mentally, I’m There
You’re here, you’re there, you’re everywhere!
Are you with me? Listening, discussing, sending a glare
Voicing your thoughts without really speaking!
Are you really there? Helping, fumbling for wording
Your ideas without being demeaning, or derogatory,
Or critical of me every time I raise a brow, or cheerily
Exclaim my feelings as we speak, or gesticulate freely
To get my point across without misunderstanding.
For a moment there, while talking, I escaped into my
World, created by my imagination, where justice is Never a lie,
Rather it’s the rule, where those who hurt others
Are punished based on the severity of their actions.
Oh what a wonderful wonder that world would be!
Any defamation or horrendous slight is penalized
In accordance to their actions. Pleasured
By all around us, feelings of superiority or inferiority
Are annexed, as all walks of life are needed to favorably
Survive a life filled with differences in needs and abilities.
Dominian of Life
The journey of life encompasses extreme emotions
From depression, to betrayal, to exhiliration.
Starting from worst to best in order to end on a positive note
We begin at the lowest times filled with darkness:
An abyss of desolateness that propels you into a whole
Whirlpool that sucks you into a vortex of helplessness.
Don’t succomb to it!
Shout out your power and suppress anything that depresses it!
Betrayal is next, it’s the real-estate of a state of extreme
Emotions overpowering your selfworth and take
You into a sepulcher of pain trying to negate Its influence.
Accept it, face it, then leave it in a chest,
Locked, chained, and sealed with the hardiest
Of mannacles that are intangible, but bind none the less!
Your exhiliration comes with success in overcoming failure,
Cheer in the face of animosity, changes that come before
You are ready, but there regardless.
Facing the challenges of change can be charmless,
Or it could be an exultation so overpowering it renders
Your fear into miniscule object that has a suppressor.
Let life’s challenges be what strengthens who you are,
Let it assert its dominion over those ‘Nay Sayer’,
Never succumbing into the blackwhole of despair.
Let your faith in yourself be your real-estate rather than a betrayer.
Happy holidays!!!!
During these trying times, please stay safe, and enjoy your holidays, even if it has to done online.
