Open Heart
What is a heart?
Is just the physics of pumping blood?
Is it a chemical reaction that spurs your heart?
Or is it the emotions that empower you in a flood?
The heart full of compassion, love, passion,
And empathy, heralds horror for those who honor
Their loved ones, friends, and co-worker.
They fear their tender heart will be crushed by disillusion.
What do you inundate your heart with to keep it safe?
Do you pour cement in it to harden and protect
Your deliriously delicate heart from hurt?
Do you swamp it with frozen clumps of ice?
Or do you keep it open for more disappointment?
Fear of being wounded by others can be paralyzing,
For out of dread, you might drive those closest
To you away by building fortified walls around your heart.
Yes, hope and trust in others CAN be painful,
But do you retreat and hide?
Or do you expose your compassionate heart
To ensnare others in your warmth?
The decision is yours, of course,
But don’t miss out on life’s pleasure Just because a few experiences were sour!
Buried in Ice
Drowning under a sheet of ice,
Flaying, swimming endlessly trying, vainly
To raise your head above the rise of the watery
Sepulcher that’s more somber than any bleak cave.
The sinuous water caresses and spontaneously
Freezes as it embraces our slumberous weight into its
Stygian obscurity, driving fear into our heavy hearts.
Propelling our entrenched sense of ‘fight or flight’ not to be flighty!
Our terror of being buried alive on land or sea
Is an apologue for the actions we take to embed
Our confusion in unraveling the social behaviored sea
Corresponding to a multicultural divide that’s likened
To attempting to surmount Everest’s easiest route
To a summit that is the ‘ideal’ we have of success.
We worry so about success and measure it with the ‘norms’
And forget our actual achievements that we need to celebrate.
Brake the ice, punch through the barrier, surge above
The mud and disgust of a world buried in icy artifice,
That needs to compete and surpass one another, and be
Who you need to be so your uniqueness can shine.
The Fear! The Fear!!!!
Fire, fire, sinuous liar, spread fear like a liar.
Ceaselessly, undulating, weaving your web with a lyre
Blending, melding, fogging your thinking,
Embedding the conductor’s swaying, moving
Hands, mesmerizing in its bright bluish, red flame, burning.
Rise, raise your filaments into the sky in supplication
To the Creator, the all powerful, the giver and taker
Of life, pleading for a savior from the twister
That surrounds your vision with a blight of fear.
Paralysis sets in, and movement is bound in a lere.
Fear, fear of a teeny weeny virus is worse
Than the fire bathing you in brine and ashe
That sizzles up your skin, sneaking, bubbling
Into scorched patches of bright stinky skin.
Emphasize the need to survive this pendemic
As surely as you empathize with your fellow man’s
Plight in their struggle to eradicate fear’s
Hold on your life and your actions.
Stear the fear into a sepulcher of death
And despair so its power lays fallow in a breath
That inhales life and hope for longevity and health.
Beseech your Creator for the will to live and breathe
In hope, optimism, compassion, and empathy for humanity.
