Certificate of Excellence,  poem: Eye of the Storm

Can’t express my gratitude for the honor.

Eye of the Storm

The southern Belle stands knowing
The storm is imminent. She looks
Towards its development, but is gazing
Towards home, worried that all, in blinks,

Will disappear through the cyclone,
Flood, twister, desert storm, any and all
Possible, as she blinks and stands like a stone,
Her wandering mind building a fall.

A fall from greatness, as she and hers
Are destroyed by a destructive nature
That has no mercy, rather only a force, a scouter
For vulnerability, and pitilessly attacks

Land, sea, farms, concrete jungles,
Where none can stand up to the veracity
Of their powerlessness when faced by nature’s
Omnipotence over those living on earth, stately.

Certificate of Appreciation

The theme, African Slavery,  is close to my heart as I was born in Ghana.  The people are friendly and wonderful to be with. My memories of growing up there is that of hot weather, beautiful plant life, forests, wide spaces, language, and culture.

‘Wish for Peace’, a poem accepted for publication

‘Wish for Peace’ is a poem reflecting on the genocide that we’re all bearing witness to. The images, sounds, emotions, fear, PTSD from bombardments’ effects, aggression, loss of entire families, murder of journalists, and much more are the basis for my ‘Wish for Peace’, not for me, but for them.

Enclosed is an exert of the poem:

Their children to schools
With filled bellies of fresh food
Sprinkled with life giving water that drools
In honor of a wish for peace that stood

On the doorstep waiting, waiting …

History of the Victor

What historical event fascinates you the most?

Each historical event is told from the victor’s perspective. That, unfortunately, always overlooks the degradation, destruction, inhumane treatment of the ‘other’, and the installation of a way of thinking that reduces the aggressed to a creature that lacks human characteristics. Examples of this are historically documented, from the Romans, Moguls, British, French, and more recently German, Russia, and Israel. They all invaded, divided, conquered, then they leave with their stamp that is un-erasable, as they instill a belief in the conquered that they are less than the conqueror in: civilization, language, religion, knowledge…

I’d like a version of history that’s unbiased, just, honest in its retelling of historical facts and events that occurred, rather than the beautified/ bastardized versions taught in schools that promote and propagate the conqueror’s agenda.

Bronze Certificate

Thank you, Marie Harris, for the honor! The picture prompts you produce are always amazing!

Winter’s Hold

A quater of the full moon
Is covered by blue clouds,
Looking like Swiss cheeses
Whose borders are tree branches,
Naked from any adornments.

As the other tree’s branches rise
Higher, they touch the smoke
Coming out of chimney’s poke,
That reaches into the sky, a supplication stroke,
To an unending, breathtaking look

Generating a reverence for the real,
Imposing nature of winter’s bold
Winter scenery that takes a hold
Over you, as wonder as beauty’s cold
Reverence stretches into the raven sky taking in the fold.

As the branches hug the moon,
So does nature embrace man’s vicarious
Need to expand into its territory, vivacious
In his propagation, uncaring of his malicious
Effect on nature’s cycle that’s on the way to decimation.

Double Gold Certificate

I’m flabbergasted by the honor of this certificate for my poem: Athena, based on a picture prompt.

Athena

Her resplendent beauty gleams
In the raven sky, her star shines
Brighter with her golden armor, protective
Of her vulnerabilities, as she needs to survive.
Its glow is there to strive
To outlast the unbeliever who stirs the hive.

Her might glistens and reverberates
Throughout her vicinity, vindictive as it propels
Instability, division, dissention, and war!
Booming war cries echo their strengths, none bar
Her entry, as she subjugates those weaker
Through fear and magic of her glittery armor.

Those whose insolence is hidden behind their
Camouflage of piety, are two, three faced, where
They keep their dissonance locked,
So their perfidy is unexpected,
And the humbleness nothing but beguiled
Discourse that pleases the open hearted.

Beware of those wearing lambskin,
But are in reality cutthroats whose noggin
Is an empty shell that requires
It to be filled by others to act out wars.

Double Bronze certificate!

Wohooooo!

Room of Bloom

The ancient mansion stood majestically
On a hill, reigning supreme over its property.
Its white washed Roman columns
Portentous of a long gone Era of prosperties,
Where everything was grandiosely fashioned.

I walk up to its opulent two door gate, bold,
Using the lionhead brass knocker, collide
History with modernity that interact without
Affecting one another, but beauties attract
Their audience, regardless of their epoch.

Traversing into a world of Babylonian
Elegance painted in a rainbow of augustian
Splendor dotted by verdant dendritic
Filled foliage attracting visions of historic
Opulence, whose loss is catastrophic in nature.

Man’s love of wealth and ownership
Of all that’s esthetically vibrant will flip
His survival to death, caused by his avarice,
Omnipotent in its idolatry of self-importance,
That’s thoughtless in its vanity and egotism.

The Warrior

Her helmet, a squelettal head,
Adorns her brows and forehead.
Her eyes, oh her eyes, windows
To her hardened soul, throws
A challenge to her opponent
To stand down, die, or be subservient.

Her breathtaking beauty will tempt,
But it’s feared as it’s a construct
For those who oppose her will.
Her lithe, seductively attired body is full
Of pernicious intent teetering
On the precipice of justice’s peppering.

Her darkened eyes, bright with
Evil’s pretensions seeping bliss
In veins dripping toxic poisons
That leek from lush, glistening roses
That spew hatred and dissention
That needs to be dismantled in provision

For the lives that are destroyed by
Her delicate sword wielding hands that fly.

Parched …

Gloom, bloom, doom.
It’s summer, and everything is in bloom,
But the gray skies strive
To hide the downpour that’ll revive.

Each drop of water is precious,
As it cleanses, moistens the gracious
Ground that mixes water, soil, and deteriorating
Vegetation fuse together and are nourishing ..

To the soil, parched for nutrients,
Only rain gives and inundates
The ground with vitamins
That helps vegetation be man’s lungs,

As the destructive man pollutes,
Decimates and ruins
Farm lands as he turns
Them into bare deserts,

We look upon what we’ve wrought,
Feeling helpless as fishes caught
In a net of our making. As we fought
To reverse our destructive blot.
